Item number: 1156502
PRICE: 70.000,00 €
Description
CHINA, Rare figure of Bodhidharma, 1735–1796
Qing dynasty. Jade with anthracite gray inclusions, carved in the round and finely engraved, partially rubbed with gold.
The figure depicts Bodhidharma with an open, loosely falling robe that reveals his clearly protruding ribs. The roundly modeled head with slightly visible teeth gives the figure an expressive, almost ascetic presence. The lower body rests in a stable posture and conveys an impression of dignified imperturbability. The clothing is decorated with delicate, partly ornamental patterns; the headband shows artfully engraved lucky cloud motifs.
Bodhidharma is considered the legendary founder of Chan Buddhism and is often depicted in Chinese art in a contemplative, introverted posture.
Height/width: 12.5 × 9.5 cm. On original wooden base. Minimal signs of wear.
Provenance: Private collection, Hesse; according to oral tradition, acquired locally during the Boxer Rebellion (1900–1901).
