The present watch is the Patek Philippe Calatrava ref. 5086R-001 “Five Weeks in a Balloon”, an extraordinary limited edition of just ten pieces, created as part of the Maison’s celebrated series of métiers d’art timepieces. Drawing inspiration from Jules Verne’s 1863 adventure novel, this rare reference transforms the dial into a vivid narrative scene, paying tribute to the spirit of exploration, imagination, and scientific curiosity that defined the literary world of the 19th century.
 
At the heart of the watch lies a remarkable cloisonné enamel dial, depicting a richly detailed engraving-inspired scene of a balloon voyage suspended above an exotic landscape. The execution of this miniature artwork is nothing short of exceptional, requiring approximately 82 cm of hand-shaped gold wire to form the delicate partitions that define the composition. Within these fine boundaries, artisans apply 48 different translucent and opaque enamel colors, building depth, contrast, and subtle tonal transitions through multiple kiln firings. The result is a dial that is both painterly and sculptural, alive with color and intricate detail.
